Not everyone鈥檚 path to college is straightforward. For Brian Wentz, it took a life-changing family event, a whole lot of dedication, and an unshakable belief in the power of education to set him on the course he鈥檚 on today.
Now, as the newest member of the 海角社区 Foundation Board, Brian brings not only decades of banking and leadership experience, but also a deeply personal understanding of what it means to build a future through education.
After graduating high school, Brian didn鈥檛 head straight to college. He was working full-time in a plumbing and heating supply business, making his own way in the world. 鈥淚 was doing okay,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 had my own place, paid my bills. But when my dad had a serious health scare, it changed everything. I reevaluated where I was going.鈥
Brian enrolled in college, paid his way with loans, and worked 20鈥30 hours a week. It wasn鈥檛 easy 鈥 but it built character. 鈥淣othing was handed to me,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 had to make real choices, juggle priorities, and hustle to make it all work. And that experience 鈥 it shaped who I am.鈥
He went on to earn his MBA from the University of St. Thomas and his Certified Financial Planner鈩 designation, both while working full-time. 鈥淚鈥檓 a believer in continuous learning,鈥 Brian says. 鈥淭hat mindset has carried me throughout my career.鈥
When asked why he鈥檚 joining the NHCC Foundation Board, Brian doesn鈥檛 hesitate: 鈥淏ecause I believe in what NHCC stands for. I believe in second chances, and in what education can unlock for people who are ready to do the work but need someone to open the door.鈥
Brian has lived in Brooklyn Park for over 17 years and sees NHCC as a cornerstone of the community. 鈥淭he college is developing young people who will be the future leaders of this region. And as business leaders, we need to invest in them 鈥 not just financially, but with our time and support.鈥
He first connected with NHCC through the Foundation鈥檚 Golf Classic and Celebration of Generosity events. 鈥淭he message at those events stuck with me,鈥 he says. 鈥淓ducation gives people opportunity and options. That鈥檚 something I understand deeply.鈥
In joining the Board, Brian hopes to elevate the role of the business community in student success and help foster partnerships that will benefit both students and employers. 鈥淚鈥檓 happy to serve in any way I can 鈥 formally or informally 鈥 to advocate for this college and its students.鈥
As NHCC continues to grow its reach and impact, voices like Brian鈥檚 will be essential in building bridges, opening doors, and keeping education accessible to all who seek it.
