Peer Tutors provide academic support in a variety of subjects at no additional cost to the student. They assist students by reviewing course concepts and materials from class, clarifying points of confusion, and developing study strategies. Our goal is to help supplement students鈥 classroom learning and build skills to become more independent learners.

Respectful Tutoring Environment
NHCC Tutoring is committed to an environment of respect from both its employees and those accessing its resources. With this goal in mind, we ask students to refrain from answering calls or texts while being tutored and help create an inclusive environment by limiting noise and distractions. This commitment also includes respecting each other鈥檚 time and actively striving for academic improvement. Tutors are expected to keep their appointments in a timely manner, and tutees are expected to do the same. If a student will be late or will need to miss an appointment, we strongly encourage active communication with the Tutoring Front Desk to cancel or re-schedule the appointment at least 5 minutes before the appointment time. Tutees are also expected to put active effort into their learning outside of tutoring, including being responsible for completing tasks a tutor assigns to them before being able to access tutoring again. Our goal is to help students become independent learners, and part of that process is for students to continually practice on their own after their tutoring session.
Peer Tutoring FAQs
Students are encouraged to ask about specific types of problems they are struggling with and will get the most out of the appointment by planning ahead and knowing what they specifically need more help with. Students may also have questions about specific concepts gone over in a lecture or textbook and are encouraged to bring those resources so that the tutor can try to explain the concepts in a different way. Additional resources students may want to bring include specific assignments, old tests and quizzes, notes, and any necessary tools such as calculators, among other resources.
Peer Tutoring offers help in a variety of course areas including Biology, Chemistry, Math, Business, Excel, Paralegal, Health Professions, etc. Availability of certain subjects can be variable depending on what qualified tutors are available. Call, email, or drop by the tutoring department if you have questions about availability for a specific course or subject area.
You do not need to make an appointment to see a tutor, but since tutors in specific subject areas may be limited, it is recommended to make one to ensure that you will be able to get help in a specific subject area.
We ask that you do not bring a guest to scheduled one-on-one appointments. However, group tutoring may be allowed at the discretion of individual tutors. To check this, ask the tutor or the Peer Tutoring Coordinator or contact the front desk (phone: 763-424-0927 / email: tutoring@nhcc.edu). For help with math in a group setting, the Math Resource Center has drop-in tutoring where you and a friend can both get help, in-person or on Zoom. For more information, see the Math Resource Center.
